Blackburn Chemicals limited was formed in 1972 by the present chairman, George Lamb. At various stages of the company’s development five of George’s children joined the company and shared his vision of a privately owned family business successfully competing around the world in their specialist market.

Initial production consisted of a range of paper processing chemicals – biocides, cleaners, dispersants, wetting agents and foam control agents. We soon realised we could not succeed with such a diverse product range. It was decided to concentrate on Dispelair® Foam Control agents and the business grew quickly.

In 1975 the company moved to its first purpose built factory on a 5 acre site on the outskirts of Blackburn. Further expansion has followed resulting in today’s modern 10 acre manufacturing, research and development and administration centre.

From the outset we realised the importance of exporting and knew that successfully competing in overseas markets was vital for the company’s future. 1980 saw Blackburn Chemicals selling Dispelair® products into Europe for the first time. The range was an immediate success and encouraged the company to spread its wings internationally. Today export sales worldwide account for over 75% of company turnover.

In 1998, after twenty six years at the helm, George stepped aside and left the challenge of continuing the company’s success to the next generation. The Company has maintained its independence, exciting new markets are being explored and the future seems bright.
